about

"Color Hex’s charismatic vocalist Hannah McCain really jazzes me on their debut album a temporary feeling. As she sings her way through contradictions and confusions, angers and disdains aplenty, her bold voice walks a deserted trail through the uncanny valley betwixt Mount Karen O. and Mount Bobcat Goldthwait, her voice traverses the unsteady banks of Tom Waits River and it basks in the husky, bawdy shadows of Nina Hagen Forest, only to end up erecting its own lawless frontier town — Camp Color Hex, obvs — in the middle of it all.

The four-piece Portland band — which I’ll call indie-punk for the purposes of easy categorization — is rounded out by Lee Scott on guitar, Benjamine Sapp on bass and Grant Mason on drums. I want to call them “younguns” because Color Hex is a brand new(ish) band, but they’re not newbies, and the songs are better than 90 percent of what comes out of Portland from comparable punk bands right now. Led by those guitar and vocal melodies with resolute, wild-yet-controlled playing from the rhythm section, Color Hex’s short songs are themselves thoughtful and purposeful, and they feel alive with vitality."
